Madonna di Campiglio

Madonna di Campiglio, where Rick Montoya finds himself in Death in the Dolomites, sits north west of Trento in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. It's location in a bowl surrounded by mountains on three sides makes it an ideal vacation spot all year round.

All the ski runs start and end in the town.

After skiing or hiking, it's fun to walk around the town, especially the main piazza, perhaps stopping for a hot drink.

This fresco, which is described in the book, is in fact not located in Madonna di Campiglio, but in the near-by town of Pinzolo.

Of the regional specialties eaten by Rick in the book, here are three. The first is speck, a smoked, cured pork eaten as an antipasto or put in some pasta dishes. Below that is gnocchi verdi al gorgonzola, potato gnocchi with a creamy cheese sauce. Finally pizzoccheri, buckwheat pasta tossed with collard greens, potato slices and soft cheese, great for an appetite built by a morning of skiing.
